~ Idaho Falls Fire Department Urges Fireworks Safety After Two Vegetation Fires
On the evening of July 3, two vegetation fires near Comish Lane and High Willow Lane in Idaho Falls caused a stir among local residents. The fires, which were ignited simultaneously by fireworks, burned approximately 5 acres of land and stretched local firefighting resources to their limits. Fortunately, no structures were damaged and no evacuations were required.
The Idaho Falls Fire Department, along with other agencies such as the Bureau of Land Management, Central Fire District, Ucon Fire Department, Bonneville County Fire District No. 1, and Shelley Fire Department responded to the incidents. The Bonneville County Sheriff's Office and Bonneville County Emergency Management also provided crucial support. Despite the challenging conditions, firefighters were able to stop the progression of the fires and remained on scene throughout the night to monitor the area.
Fire Chief Johan Olson emphasized the importance of being cautious with fireworks during this time of year. "These fires are a reminder of how quickly conditions can change," he said. "We are experiencing extremely dry conditions, and even legal, consumer-grade fireworks can start fast-moving fires." He also expressed gratitude that no lives or properties were lost in these incidents.

The Idaho Falls Fire Department is urging residents to follow all laws regarding fireworks and to use caution not only while lighting them but also when preparing areas for their use. Dry vegetation can easily catch fire from small sparks from various sources such as vehicles or equipment.
Chief Olson also highlighted the impact that multiple fires can have on available resources. "When multiple fires happen at the same time, our available resources become limited," he explained. "Every unnecessary fire has the potential to delay emergency response elsewhere or grow beyond our ability to contain it quickly." He urged everyone celebrating over the holiday weekend to make responsible choices and remain aware of their surroundings.
In conclusion, the Idaho Falls Fire Department is reminding the public that preventing a fire is much easier than stopping one once it starts. They are asking for everyone's cooperation in reducing the risk of fires during this time of year. Let us all celebrate responsibly and keep our community safe.
