The award was presented to Mayor Weldon at the 74th Annual AML Local Government Conference in Anchorage on December 12. She was nominated for the award by City of Kodiak Mayor Pat Branson, who highlighted Mayor Weldon's dedication to a sustainable childcare sector and her leadership during difficult events.
Mayor Weldon has been serving as mayor since 2018, following two years as an Assembly member. She is currently serving her third term as mayor. Prior to entering public office, she spent twenty years with Capital City Fire/Rescue, retiring as division chief.
In addition to her work in local government, Mayor Weldon is also a dedicated volunteer for various Juneau community organizations. These include the Juneau Glacier Valley Rotary Club, Juneau Ski Club board, CCFR volunteer firefighters, and student swim, wrestling, and track & field clubs.
The Vic Fischer Local Government Leadership Award was established in honor of longtime State Senator Vic Fischer and is judged by the AML Board of Directors based on nominations from member municipalities. Previous recipients include former Juneau Mayor Bruce Botelho (2011).
