Juneau: Multigovernment Effort to Address Health and Safety Concerns in Aak'w Village District Moves Forward

~ Juneau, Alaska - The City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ) and Tlingit & Haida are teaming up to address long-standing public health, safety, and environmental concerns in the downtown area behind Willoughby and Capital Avenues. This includes the historic Aak'w Village District.
According to CBJ and Tlingit & Haida, they are working closely with property owners, service providers, and community partners to tackle issues such as accumulated waste and other conditions that are affecting the well-being of the community. The cleanup is set to begin on September 1st at properties located at 368, 376, 386 Village St, as well as in CBJ Rights of Way. This will involve the removal of junk vehicles, waste, and debris.

City Manager Katie Koester will provide an update on these efforts during the Regular Assembly meeting on September 14th. The ultimate goal is to create a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for the community while also taking into consideration the complex circumstances of those currently living or using the area.
The joint effort between CBJ and Tlingit & Haida also aims to connect individuals with mental health services, recovery programs, housing options, and other supportive resources whenever possible. They are committed to addressing immediate concerns with dignity and respect.
Furthermore, both parties are dedicated to finding long-term solutions for maintaining the area in a way that honors its deep historical significance as the Aak'w Village District.
