Long Beach Recognizes September as National Preparedness Month

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As National Preparedness Month kicks off, the City of Long Beach is urging its residents to prioritize emergency preparedness. The Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications will be sharing information, resources, and practical tips throughout September to help individuals, households, and neighborhoods take meaningful steps towards being prepared for major emergencies and disasters.

Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the importance of being prepared for any potential disaster. "National Preparedness Month is an excellent opportunity for all of us to assess our readiness for a major emergency or disaster," he stated. "Preparation doesn't have to be complicated. Simple actions like creating a family emergency plan, assembling a go-bag, or getting to know your neighbors can make a significant difference when disaster strikes. I encourage every Long Beach resident to take time this September to prepare themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods."

The City's theme this year is "All Stand Ready," which encourages residents to take four key actions to strengthen their preparedness:

- Make a family emergency plan that includes evacuation procedures and considers the unique needs of household members such as pets or elderly family members.

- Sign up for Alert Long Beach to receive emergency notifications via text, phone, or email.

- Build an emergency supply kit with enough supplies to last at least five days.

- Get to know your community and prepare with your neighbors before a disaster strikes.

To promote National Preparedness Month, the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications will be participating in various community events throughout September. These events include the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Community Health Fair on September 12th at Houghton Park and the 2026 Family Health Festival on September 26th at Ability First Education Center.

In addition, the department will also be running a social media campaign on Facebook and Instagram under @LBDisasterPrep. Residents are encouraged to follow these accounts for information on how to prepare for disasters, build an emergency kit, and sign up for emergency notifications.

The City's efforts to promote preparedness also extend beyond September. On October 15th at 10:15 a.m., Long Beach residents are encouraged to participate in the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. This annual exercise aims to prepare individuals and communities for the region's most probable natural disaster - an earthquake.

Reginald Harrison, Director of the Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications Department, stressed the importance of being prepared for any type of emergency. "The prolonged period of extreme heat we are currently experiencing and the 'Super El Niño' forecasted for this winter serve as reminders that emergencies can take many forms and happen at any time," he said. "Preparedness starts with understanding the hazards we face as a City and taking steps now to protect our families and our neighborhoods."

By following simple steps such as creating a family emergency plan and building an emergency supply kit, individuals can help build a more resilient community in the face of potential disasters.
