Looming ban threats of TikTok Causes Uncertainty For Creators - New Platform Brings Hope
TelAve News/10782799
Millions of Creators Could Be Affected By a Possible Ban, Rick Moghadam Investigates.
INDIANAPOLIS - TelAve -- "TikTok is my business, Rick..." began an emotional conversation that has sparked concern in Washington. Tim Knight, the owner of an online retailer selling entertaining t-shirts, has expanded his business using short-form videos to showcase his products to his 184,000 predominantly Gen Z followers. He has collaborated with Metromedia Branding since 2019 and now fears the potential consequences of a TikTok ban, as his entire following originates from the platform and more than half of them use TikTok exclusively.
Tim's story is not unique; many small businesses have found TikTok to be a superior platform for reaching their target audience compared to Facebook and Snapchat. However, recent bipartisan legislation has granted the Biden administration new powers to take action, including a ban, against foreign-linked electronics or software producers deemed a national security risk, according to CNN Business.
Critics argue that other platforms, such as Facebook and Apple, have similar data collection capabilities as the Chinese-owned TikTok, and the Chinese Communist Party could potentially acquire the same data from these alternative sources. With over a billion users, TikTok's opponents question the timing and reasoning behind the ban.

As content creators and users seek a replacement platform, Metromedia Funding Solutions has supported the development of LHN Social, known as Headline, which is set to launch on St. Patrick's Day. The platform aims to protect content creators and their followers rather than "take people away from TikTok." It will incorporate monetization and live-streaming features, as well as filters developed by Metromedia's sister brand, Videostars.
The new platform combines aspects of TikTok and Facebook, utilizing US-based servers with WIX and enhanced security to prevent data sales. As a live working project, the platform will continuously improve and adapt based on user feedback and needs.
The potential TikTok ban raises concerns about First Amendment rights, and this issue has accelerated the development of the LHN Social project, which aims to fill the void left by TikTok if a ban does occur.
