CHICAGO ~ Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, along with the City Council, unanimously passed a resolution today honoring the life and contributions of Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson Sr. The resolution recognizes Rev. Jackson's legacy as an integral part of Chicago's civic identity and ongoing pursuit of justice, equity, and human dignity.
During the March 18 City Council meeting, the Jackson family was in attendance as they were presented with a copy of the resolution. This physical embodiment serves as a testament to the city's respect, gratitude, and remembrance of Rev. Jackson.
Known as one of the most influential civil rights leaders in modern American history, Rev. Jackson's organizing skills helped reshape the democratic and social landscape of the United States. He translated the ethos of the Civil Rights Movement into a continuous fight for economic equity, political representation, educational opportunity, and global human rights.
Rev. Jackson rose to national prominence through his work alongside Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Chicago, which ultimately became the enduring stage for his life's work and leadership. In Chicago, he built institutions such as Operation PUSH that became synonymous with empowerment, opportunity, and advocacy for generations of Chicagoans.
