~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has announced that a new four-year contract has been ratified by the membership of Boston Firefighters IAFF Local 718, the union representing approximately 1,500 members of the Boston Fire Department. This contract, which was reached under Mayor Wu's leadership, aims to improve the quality of life for firefighters and strengthen operations to ensure the best public safety for the residents of Boston.

The ratification vote took place on December 22, 2025 and marks the second contract reached between the City of Boston and Local 718 under Mayor Wu's leadership. In a statement, Mayor Wu expressed her gratitude for the dedication and sacrifice of Boston firefighters and their families in serving the city. She also highlighted her partnership with President Sam Dillon and Boston Firefighters Local 718 in reaching this agreement.

Fire Commissioner Paul F. Burke also praised the new contract, stating that it not only strengthens operational structure but also fairly compensates firefighters for their professionalism and respect in serving the residents of Boston. President Dillon echoed these sentiments, thanking Mayor Wu for recognizing and supporting the invaluable service provided by Boston firefighters.

The new agreement covers a four-year period from July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2028 at a total cost of approximately $90 million. As part of this contract, every firefighter will receive a 2.5% wage increase in the first year and a 2% increase over the following three years.

In addition to salary increases, adjustments have been made to improve quality of life for firefighters. The base salaries at five, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service have been adjusted to ensure that as firefighters commit more time to serving Boston, their pay will adequately compensate for their years of service. The contract also includes enhancements to line-of-duty death benefits for active firefighters who tragically lose their lives while on duty.

In terms of operations reform, this contract includes measures to bolster public safety infrastructure in the city of Boston. A new electronic detail application will be implemented to streamline the process of filling and paying details, and retired Boston Fire firefighters under the age of 75 will now be allowed to work paid fire details. The paid detail rate will also increase over the course of the contract.

The contract also recognizes the Marine Unit as a specialized operation, requiring specific training for those serving in this capacity. It ensures that those assigned to this unit meet certain qualifications within the Special Operations Command.

This marks Mayor Wu's 64th contract settlement with unions representing employees at the City of Boston, Boston Public Health Commission, and Boston Public Schools during her first term as Mayor. The Boston City Council is set to vote on the approval of this contract in the new year.
