EVANSVILLE, Ind. ~ Evansville, Indiana - In a joint effort, Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry, the Evansville Veterans Affairs (VA) Healthcare Center, and METS have announced the launch of a new pilot program aimed at providing disabled veterans with free bus service. The program, known as the Patriot Pass, will run for three years and is open to veterans with a service-connected disability rating of at least 10%.

Mayor Stephanie Terry expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating that "one of the best ways we can honor our veterans is by removing barriers that make everyday life harder." She believes that providing free access to METS will give disabled veterans another tool to stay independent and connected to healthcare, work, and everything else the community has to offer.

Eligible veterans can register for the Patriot Pass by visiting either the METS Administrative Office or the Evansville VA Healthcare Center. For those in need of assistance with registration or have questions about the program, METS officials will be available at a booth located at the VA Clinic on the first Tuesday of each month from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Alternatively, veterans can also download a registration form online and mail it to the METS Administrative Office. To complete their application, applicants must present a valid photo ID and a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs determination letter verifying their service-connected disability rating.

Fred Roche, Executive Director of the Marion VA Health Care System - parent facility to the Evansville VA Health Care Center - expressed his appreciation for this initiative. He believes that it will help ensure that veterans can access necessary care with fewer missed appointments and better continuity of care. Ultimately leading to better overall health outcomes over time.

The idea for this program was sparked during a Traveling City Hall discussion where a resident identified an opportunity to improve transportation access for disabled veterans. This feedback aligns with Mayor Stephanie Terry's commitment to ensuring residents have a voice in city government and that community input helps shape meaningful solutions. She believes that "ideas like these are exactly why we hold Traveling City Hall meetings" and that "some of our best ideas come from the people who live here." She sees this program as a win for the community, as it will improve the lives of those it serves.
