Mesa: Councilmember Heredia Elected Chair of Valley Metro Rail Board

~ Mesa District 3 Councilmember Francisco Heredia has been elected as the new Chair of the Valley Metro Rail Board of Directors. The decision was made during the board's meeting on August 27, with Councilmember Heredia set to serve in this role until June 30, 2027.
In his statement, Councilmember Heredia emphasized the importance of public transportation in connecting people to jobs, education, healthcare, and opportunities. He also expressed his commitment to working with regional partners to prioritize safety, reliability, and accountability in all decisions. Additionally, he promised to ensure that the voices of Mesa residents and businesses are heard as they plan for the future of the regional transit system.
The Valley Metro Rail Board is responsible for providing policy direction and oversight for the regional light rail system. This includes overseeing operations, safety measures, maintenance, financial management, and future transit investments.

He expressed confidence that Councilmember Heredia's experience and leadership will benefit not only Mesa but also the entire Valley.
Councilmember Heredia has been representing Mesa's District 3 since joining the City Council in 2017. He brings a wealth of experience to his new role as Chair of Valley Metro Rail Board, having previously served as chair for both the Valley Metro Rail and Regional Public Transportation Authority boards.
Valley Metro CEO Jessica Mefford-Miller also commended Councilmember Heredia's appointment as Chair. She described him as a visionary leader who prioritizes safe and reliable growth while keeping community needs at the forefront. She expressed gratitude for having him serve as Chair during fiscal year 2027.
