~ Falcon Field Airport, located in northeast Mesa, has recently become one of the first airports in the nation to receive advanced airfield technology as part of the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Surface Awareness Initiative (SAI). This initiative is a nationwide effort to enhance runway safety and improve overall airport operations.

The new Aerobahn Runway and Surface Safety service, developed by Saab, Inc., is an advanced sensor technology that detects aircraft and vehicle movements across the airport surface. This information is then displayed in real time on control tower monitoring systems. The installation of four sensors began last November with minimal disruption to airfield operations.

Corinne Nystrom, Airport Director at Falcon Field, emphasized the importance of safety as their highest priority. She stated that investments like this help ensure that the airport continues to meet the highest standards for pilots, tenants, and the community they serve.

The SAI program was created in response to the 2023 FAA Safety Call to Action, which aims to strengthen safety measures at airports without Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE). Mark Gibbs, Airport Projects and Operations Manager, explained that this new system provides traffic controllers with greater real-time insight into airfield activity. He also noted that it is an important addition that strengthens both safety and efficiency.

FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker also highlighted the impact of this new technology. He stated that it is a cost-effective solution that provides controllers with timely and accurate depictions of aircraft and vehicles on the entire airfield, regardless of weather conditions.

Sarah Schoof, Vice President of Surveillance Systems at Saab, Inc., expressed her confidence in their Aerobahn Runway and Surface Safety service. She believes it will give air traffic controllers advanced insight into airfield movement and help reduce risks on the ground. Schoof also acknowledged Falcon Field's support during implementation as a testament to their dedication to safer and more efficient operations.
