Mesa Partners with NHTSA for National Teen Driver Safety Action Week and Seeks Community Input for the Road Safety Action Plan
TelAve News/10844399
~ Mesa, AZ - The U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has joined forces with the City of Mesa to support National Teen Driver Safety Week, which will take place from October 20-26. This week serves as an opportunity to raise awareness and provide resources for parents and guardians to educate their teens on safe driving habits.
According to R.J. Zeder, Director of the Transportation Department, "We believe that everyone has a role to play in creating a safety culture on our streets. Road safety education starts at home." With 35% of fatal and serious injury crashes in Mesa involving someone under the age of 25, it is crucial for parents to have discussions with their teen drivers about risky driving behaviors.
Studies have shown that teens whose parents set firm rules for driving are less likely to engage in risky behaviors and are involved in fewer crashes. NHTSA offers tips for parents and guardians on how to talk about safer driving, including discussions on positive influences and addressing dangerous behaviors such as alcohol or drug use, lack of seat belt use, distracted driving, speeding, or driving with passengers.

The City of Mesa has made a commitment to reduce fatalities and serious injuries caused by motor vehicle crashes by 30% by 2030. To achieve this goal, they are creating a Road Safety Action Plan that will evaluate the most important contributing factors in fatal and serious crashes.
Earlier this year, the City asked the community for input on areas of concern in Mesa. Now, they are asking for help in prioritizing potential strategies that could be implemented in the future through their Phase 2 Survey. This feedback will help refine their road safety efforts. The survey will be open until November 15th.
