New Rochelle: North Ave Bridge Project- Overnight Demolition starts Wedns. March 12
TelAve News/10856295
~ New Rochelle, NY - The New York State Thruway Authority has announced that the next phase of construction for the North Avenue Bridge replacement project will begin on Wednesday, March 12. This stage of the project will involve the removal of the remaining portion of the bridge over the New England Thruway (I-95) in New Rochelle, Westchester County.
According to officials, this demolition work will require overnight lane closures and traffic stops on I-95 and North Avenue. These closures are expected to last for approximately three weeks, weather permitting.
The $31.8 million project began in January 2023 and is expected to be completed later this year. The first stage of construction involved building the outermost components of the new bridge, including installing piles, constructing a center pier, and pouring concrete for the road deck. During this time, Burling Lane was converted to a one-way road for westbound traffic.

Currently, all northbound traffic is traveling in the bridge's new outer lane through the work zone while southbound traffic is being detoured at Lockwood Avenue and directed to Memorial Highway. This traffic pattern will remain in place until later this year when the contractor will remove and replace the center section of the old bridge.
To facilitate safe work activities during this phase of construction, two out of three lanes in each direction on I-95 will be closed on weeknights starting at 10 p.m., with full reopening by 5 a.m. Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes around the work zone to avoid delays starting after 8 p.m.
In addition to lane closures, there will also be multiple traffic stops lasting up to 20 minutes on both I-95 and North Avenue. These stops are necessary for cranes to safely load large sections of steel onto flatbed trucks stationed below on the highway. Motorists are advised to check social media accounts for updates on travel advisories and to follow the posted detours if necessary.

The North Avenue bridge replacement project has been ongoing since 2023, and once completed, the new bridge will be wider and improve traffic flow on nearby roads. It will also raise its vertical clearance over I-95 from 14 feet 3 inches to 16 feet 6 inches. The original bridge, which opened in 1958, connects North Avenue, Garden Street, Burling Lane, and Station Plaza North.
During this phase of construction, motorists are reminded to be alert and follow the posted work zone speed limits. Fines for speeding in a work zone are doubled.
For more information on the project, including maps and photos, visit the Thruway Authority's website. Digital message boards have been placed around the work zone to provide updates to motorists and pedestrians. Physical signs have also been installed in the area to alert drivers of detours and closures.
As always, motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time when passing through this area during construction. The Thruway Authority thanks everyone for their patience and cooperation as they work towards completing this important infrastructure project for the community.
