Plootus Report: U.S. Household Credit Card Debt Hits $6,501 Average, Draining $34,000+ in Retirement
TelAve News/10908191
New research from Plootus demonstrates how high-interest credit card debt at 26% APR delays retirement by 3 to 7 years for millions of middle-income Americans.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - TelAve -- Plootus today published its Average Credit Card Debt by Age & State Report, synthesizing Q1 2026 data from WalletHub, the Federal Reserve, and Experian. The report shows total U.S. credit card debt standing at $1.21 trillion, with the average household carrying $6,501 in revolving balances.
With average credit card APRs hovering between 24% and 27%, carrying a $7,000 balance generates over $1,800 in annual interest alone. Gen X and peak-earning households (ages 40–59) carry the highest debt loads, averaging nearly $10,000 per household.
"Credit card interest acts as a direct tax on your financial future," said the Plootus Research Team. "Every dollar sent to a credit card company at 26% interest is a dollar that fails to compound in tax-advantaged retirement accounts."

Key Findings:
The report outlines mathematical debt elimination methods, contrasting the interest-maximizing "Avalanche" method against the momentum-building "Snowball" technique, while advising borrowers on when to prioritize debt payoff over investing.
"Carrying high-interest debt into your 50s delays retirement by up to 7 years," the Plootus Research Team emphasized. "Eliminating 25% APR balances is equivalent to achieving a guaranteed 25% return on investment."
