Poems Following Harriet: Freedom in the Open Air amplify the theme Back to the Outdoors

GREENVILLE, S.C. - TelAve -- Harford County, Maryland native, poet, and social justice advocate, Melissa Whiteford St. Clair, founder of White Girl Advocacy LLC will be in Dorchester County, Maryland for the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park's Emancipation Day program sharing poetry in keeping with the theme Back to the Outdoors. The Emancipation Day program commemorates the 177th Anniversary of Harriet Tubman's escape from slavery.

Following Harriet: Freedom in the Open Air In celebration of Harriet Tubman Emancipation Day and this year's theme, Back to the Outdoors, Melissa Whiteford St. Clair shares a selection of original poems inspired by Harriet Tubman's extraordinary life and legacy. Through poetry, the natural world becomes part of the story—woodlands, waterways, stars, and pathways reflecting Harriet's determination to pursue freedom.

The event is free and open to the public, will be held at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park, 4068 Golden Hill Road, Church Creek, MD 21622 on Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 pm.

About Melissa Whiteford St. Clair:

Melissa Whiteford St. Clair is a poet and social justice advocate. She is the author of three books of poetry, which are available here in our library, and her poetry has been featured in several anthologies. Her poem "Harriet's Feat to Freedom" was included on the Hilton Head Island Poetry Trail at Mitchelville. She was part of the Piccolo Spoleto Sundown Poetry Series (2025). The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park is a 17-acre park owned and managed by the Maryland Park Service with support from the National Park Service. This state park and visitor center commemorates the life and legacy of the legendary Underground Railroad conductor, Harriet Tubman. Immersive exhibits depict Harriet Tubman's childhood while enslaved, her courageous flight to freedom and her daring rescue missions.
