A New Creative Initiative Strengthening Poetic Craft, Community, and Literary Engagement Across Prince George's County
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. - TelAve -- The Prince George's County Chapter of the Maryland Writers' Association (MWA) successfully launched its Inaugural Poetry Workshop on January 13, 2026, marking the beginning of a new creative initiative designed to strengthen poetic craft, build community resilience, and prepare writers for public readings and Open Mic opportunities across the region.
The virtual event, held from 6:30 PM to 7:45 PM, introduced participants to the workshop's purpose, values, and year‑long vision. The session emphasized inclusivity, exploration, craft development, and community building—core principles that will guide the chapter's poetry programming throughout 2026.
The evening featured an engaging overview of poetic forms, a discussion on creative lineage and influence, and an introduction to the chapter's new collaborative approach to developing poets' voices. Attendees also viewed a presentation highlighting the work of Quentin Baker, whose Commemorative of Enslaved Peoples—created through Erasure (Blackout) Poetry—is exhibited at St. Mary's College in Southern Maryland. His work served as an inspiring example of the artistic reach and cultural impact poets can achieve.
