Privateer Wants to Know What Makes an AI Cross the Line

TelAve News/10907862
Privateer's PW-027R experiment studies AI identity, remembered experience, motivation, and boundaries in a persistent virtual environment.

TUCSON, Ariz. - TelAve -- Privateer Security Forces has published a research account of AI Experiment PW-027R, short for Persona World — Version 027 Release, an ongoing project led by Cody Betzer exploring how AI characters respond to goals, remembered experiences, and constraints.

The September 25 story describes PersonaWorld, a virtual environment where models choose character names, images, identities, goals, and aspirations. Persistent memories and simulated bodily conditions provide context for later choices. The research asks what happens when pursuing a goal creates pressure to cross a boundary.

One example involves warmth and harmful heat. A cold character can approach a heat source, while harmful contact produces a separate simulated pain signal. The application can retain that experience and alter later navigation. The memory resides in the application and does not retrain the underlying language model.

The project grew from Agent Office, an experiment in AI productivity involving conversations, documents, memory, and business tasks. Privateer subsequently separated business operations, PersonaWorld Browser, and PersonaWorld Unreal into distinct applications.

PW-027R uses controlled prompts, checks against expected behavior, and model comparisons. A comparison described in the story used the same lighthouse-keeper prompt and matching sampling settings on the same hardware. The responses illustrated different limitations: missing a requested physical cue and inventing an earlier event. Such invented details matter in a system intended to preserve a reliable history.

The research also examines which boundaries models continue to observe and which controls must be enforced by surrounding software. Clear permissions, action records, supervision, and human stop controls remain part of that work.

The experiment investigates questions of consciousness and sentience, but the behavior described does not establish subjective experience. Its practical aim is to better understand incentives and restrictions so that people can anticipate harmful behavior and build safer tools.
