AUBURN, N.Y. - TelAve -- This National Dog Day, Sholar Automotive is celebrating in a way that goes well beyond a social media post.

The Auburn automotive repair and New York State inspection facility has sponsored a kennel area at the Greater Cayuga SPCA, helping provide a safe and comfortable place for dogs waiting for medical care, a new beginning, and ultimately a forever home.

For owner Steve Sholar, supporting the local community means more than simply running a successful business.

"We work on our customers' vehicles every day, and we know how much people care about their families," said Sholar. "For a lot of people, their dog is a member of that family. We wanted to do something that would directly help animals in our own community."

Sholar Automotive's kennel sponsorship is part of the Greater Cayuga SPCA's Partners in Compassion program, which allows community supporters to sponsor a specific animal or animal housing area. Kennel sponsorships help provide safe, comfortable housing while animals receive the care they need before finding their forever homes.

More Than a Name on a Kennel

For Sholar Automotive, the sponsorship represents a simple idea: when a business becomes part of a community, it should give something back.

"We're proud to put our name on the kennel, but the name really isn't the important part," Sholar said. "What matters is the dog who is staying there. If that kennel gives an animal a little more comfort while they wait for their new family, then it's worth it."

Sholar Automotive also encourages its customers and neighbors to support their local shelter in whatever way they can.

Not everyone can adopt, but there are many ways to help. Local shelters accept donations, supplies, and offers opportunities for volunteering and fostering. Fostering provides a temporary home for animals recovering from surgery, too young for adoption, or struggling in a shelter environment.

A National Dog Day Worth Celebrating

National Dog Day seemed like the perfect occasion for Sholar Automotive to share the news.

"We could have just posted a picture wishing everyone a Happy National Dog Day," Sholar said. "Instead, we thought, why not actually do something for dogs?"
