'Soft' interview rooms available at Springfield police stations

TelAve News/10867336
~ Greene County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Patterson and Police Chief Paul Williams have teamed up to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment for victims of domestic or sexual assault when they come forward to report their crimes. The idea for "soft" interview rooms, which are furnished with living room-like spaces, came from Patterson after he noticed a growing trend among law enforcement agencies and victim advocates across the nation.

Traditionally, police interview rooms are plain and uncomfortable, designed to be an effective environment for interrogating potential suspects. However, Patterson saw the need for victims to receive the same treatment and approached Chief Williams with his idea. "We want them to be at ease with the police officer investigating their case," said Williams. "They have already suffered through a violent crime. It is important that they feel safe here."

Thanks to donations from local businesses such as K Evans Interiors, DreamGrower Plants, National Art Shop, and Ashley Home Furnishings, as well as a grant from the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney's Office to The Victim Center, both of Springfield Police Department's stations now have soft interview rooms.

The official unveiling of these rooms will take place at Police Headquarters on October 3rd at 1:30 p.m., where media is invited to attend. This initiative aims to provide a more supportive and comforting environment for victims during what can often be a difficult and traumatic experience. With these new soft interview rooms in place, victims can feel more at ease when coming forward to report their crimes.
