August 13, 2026 ~ The City of South Bend's Department of Public Works has announced that they will be paving an additional 19 lane miles of high traffic streets in the city. This comes as part of their efforts to improve the deteriorating condition of the roads. The work is expected to be completed by the end of October and residents can track the progress at southbendin.gov/paving.

According to the department, these streets were selected based on a surface condition assessment that rates streets on a scale of 0 to 100. This assessment involves capturing video footage and using specialized software to analyze pavement distresses. The streets with the lowest scores are given priority for paving each year.

Among the high traffic streets that are slated to be paved are Angela Boulevard from Portage Avenue to Riverside Drive, Ewing Avenue from Kemble Avenue to Taylor Street, and Ironwood Road from Douglas Road to State Road 23. Other streets include Main Street from Sample Street to Ewing Avenue, Mishawaka Avenue from Emerson Avenue to Twyckenham Drive, and Western Avenue from Walnut to Arnold Streets.

This additional paving project comes in addition to the 40 lane miles that were already announced in March. The department is determined to improve the overall condition of South Bend's roads and ensure safe and smooth travel for residents.

Residents are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly as there may be temporary road closures during the paving process. The department also asks for patience and understanding during this time as they work towards improving the city's infrastructure.
