South Bend: City Announces Streets for 2026 Paving Season
TelAve News/10891889
March 27, 2026 ~ South Bend, Indiana - As the city prepares for its 2026 paving season, residents can expect to see construction crews working on more than 50 streets starting in April and continuing through mid-November. The City of South Bend has released a list of streets that will be paved this year, selected based on a surface condition assessment that rates streets on a scale of 0 to 100.
The assessment process involves capturing video footage and using specialized software to analyze pavement distresses. Streets with the lowest scores are given priority for paving each year. This year's list includes major roads such as Colfax Avenue and Ireland Road, as well as smaller residential streets like Caroline Street and Tade Court.
Paving work will be completed by both City crews and contractors. According to officials, it typically takes three to five days to complete each segment of a street. However, streets requiring full reconstruction may take longer. During construction, streets will be closed during working hours (7 am - 6 pm) and signage will be posted in advance to notify residents and businesses.
Motorists should expect delays and possible detours when traveling through areas where paving is taking place. The City is asking drivers to slow down, use alternate routes if possible, and be mindful of workers in construction zones.
In addition to paving, the City will also conduct preventative maintenance activities such as crack sealing and microsurfacing throughout the season. Residents can track the progress of paving work on the City's website at southbendin.gov/paving.
