~ Spokane County Implements Burn Restrictions to Prevent Wildfires

As the summer heat continues to rise, fire officials in Spokane County are taking proactive measures to prevent wildfires. On Tuesday, June 30, 2026, Fire Marshals from the City of Spokane, Spokane Valley Fire Department, Spokane County, Cheney, Airway Heights, and Deer Park announced the implementation of countywide burn restrictions.

According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, these restrictions are necessary due to elevated wildfire danger and forecasted hot and dry weather. Despite recent rainfall in the region, conditions remain favorable for wildfire ignition. The goal of these restrictions is to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires and protect lives, property, and natural resources throughout Spokane County.

Under these restrictions, recreational fires such as backyard fire pits and campfires are prohibited. Open burning of yard debris and field burning is also not allowed. However, residents can still use manufactured barbecues, pellet grills, smokers, chimineas, outdoor fireplaces, and patio heaters as long as they follow the manufacturer's instructions. Approved fuels such as clean and dry seasoned firewood, charcoal, propane, and natural gas are also permitted. Designated campground or park campfires may be allowed with approval from the agency having jurisdiction.

Fire officials warn that smoke from outdoor burning can have a negative impact on air quality and pose a health risk to vulnerable individuals such as children and older adults with heart or respiratory conditions. They urge residents to contact their local fire agency before lighting any outdoor fire.

Failure to comply with these restrictions may result in misdemeanor penalties under International Fire Code Section 109 and Spokane County Code 3.02. The regional Fire Marshals express their appreciation for the community's cooperation in preventing wildfires and keeping Spokane County safe during this summer season.
