Spokane: Firefighters Prevent Extension During Fast-Moving House Fire
TelAve News/10900641
~ Spokane, WA- Firefighters were called to the 500 block of East Kedlin Avenue yesterday afternoon after receiving multiple reports of a carport fire with explosions heard. The incident was upgraded to a Working Fire upon arrival due to the large column of smoke seen en route.
According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, responding crews were met with heavy fire involving a shed, deck, and the home. Mutual aid from Spokane County Fire District 9 arrived within five minutes and immediately began an aggressive fire attack.
Crews searched the home to confirm all occupants had escaped and deployed multiple hoselines to quickly knock down most of the fire. However, they also had to address extension into the attic. To improve interior conditions and extinguish hidden fire, ventilation holes were cut in the roof.
The firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within 15 minutes. While the home sustained significant damage from fire, smoke, and water, crews were able to prevent it from spreading to neighboring residences. The only damage reported at a neighboring residence was melted vinyl siding from heat exposure.

After conducting an investigation, it was determined that the cause of the fire was accidental. Welding sparks ignited nearby combustible materials which smoldered undetected for about 20 minutes before rapidly spreading into the home. The explosions reported by bystanders were caused by paint cans and compressed gas cylinders stored in the shed.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in this incident. However, two adults, two dogs, and four cats have been displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross has been contacted for assistance.
This incident serves as an important reminder that hot work such as welding can ignite combustible materials before flames are visible. It is crucial for individuals to clear the area of any potential hazards before starting any welding project. It is also recommended to keep a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby and remain on scene for at least 30 minutes after finishing to ensure no hidden fires have started.
Photos of the aftermath of the fire have been released, showing the extent of the damage caused. The first photo shows the shed and deck completely engulfed in flames, while the second photo shows firefighters working to extinguish the fire.
As a result of this incident, authorities are urging individuals to take necessary precautions when conducting hot work projects to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
