Springfield: Mt. Vernon Street to close for six weeks between Lulwood and Miller avenues

TelAve News/10870724
~ As part of the ongoing efforts to improve pedestrian safety and connectivity in the city, Mt. Vernon Street will be closed for approximately six weeks beginning August 11. The closure will be between Lulwood Avenue and Miller Avenue, and is necessary for the Mt. Vernon and Miller Sidewalk Improvement Project.

According to city officials, the project aims to install new sidewalk segments that will connect existing sidewalks along Mt. Vernon and Miller Streets. This will not only improve pedestrian safety but also provide better access to nearby schools and residential areas.

In addition to the new sidewalks, certain segments will also see infrastructure improvements such as stormwater drainage, sanitary sewer, and gas/water lines. These upgrades are expected to enhance the overall functionality of the area.

Motorists should be aware of intermittent lane closures in the vicinity during construction. To avoid any inconvenience, through traffic is advised to follow posted detours utilizing Miller Avenue, Grand Street, Haseltine Avenue, and Chestnut Expressway.

The contract for this project has been awarded to JD Wallace Contracting, LLC. The estimated cost of construction is $813,000 and will be primarily funded through Federal Transportation Alternatives Program funds along with contributions from Clean Water Enterprise Funds, City Utilities reimbursements, and ¼-cent Capital Improvement and 1/8-cent Transportation sales tax funds.

If all goes as planned (weather permitting), the project is expected to be completed by late-September. This improvement is a significant step towards creating a safer and more connected community for residents in this area.
