~ In the latest Quarterly Public Safety Report released by the Springfield Police Department (SPD), it was revealed that there has been an overall increase in crime during the third quarter of 2017. This is in comparison to the same time period in 2016, with a 5 percent rise in reported crimes.

According to the report, there was a 2 percent increase in violent crimes against persons and a 5 percent increase in crimes against property. Notably, there were significant rises in larcenies and vehicle thefts. Thefts from inside vehicles, which are included in larcenies, saw a staggering jump of 30 percent compared to the third quarter of 2016. These thefts often occur from unlocked vehicles or items left in plain sight, making them an easy target for criminals. Vehicle thefts also increased by 14 percent during this time period.

The SPD noted that this time last year is when they began to see a dramatic spike in vehicle thefts, which is why the year-to-year comparison may not seem as drastic as it has been in previous quarters of 2017. It is important to note that vehicle theft reports include not just cars and trucks, but also scooters, motorcycles, ATVs and golf carts.

Aside from crime statistics, the Quarterly Public Safety Report also highlights information about the Level Property Tax on the November 2017 ballot and how those tax dollars affect the operations of SPD.

The publication of this report by SPD began back in October 2013 with the aim of increasing awareness about public safety issues within the community. In addition to providing crime statistics, it also showcases innovative programs and highlights crime prevention strategies being implemented by the department.
