Springfield: Renew Jordan Creek construction marks major milestone with 48-hour culvert installation
TelAve News/10881902
~ Springfield's Renew Jordan Creek daylighting project reached a major milestone this week as crews successfully installed 70 precast concrete box culvert sections over active Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway tracks in downtown Springfield. The installation, which was completed in just 48 hours, was a significant achievement as it was done in half the time approved by BNSF.
The work began at 8 a.m. on Thursday, November 13th near the intersection of Boonville Avenue and Mill Street. Contractors quickly mobilized to excavate the work zone and prepare the base rock. With specialized crews carefully placing each 37,000-pound box culvert segment, backfilling the area, and returning the site to BNSF for track reconstruction, the project involved more than 90 construction professionals working around-the-clock in multiple shifts. By Saturday at 10 a.m., the installation was complete and track reconstruction was wrapped up by Monday evening.

The newly-installed culverts will significantly increase stormwater capacity and contribute to reducing flooding to downtown properties and infrastructure. "This was an exceptionally well-coordinated effort," stated Renew Jordan Creek Project Manager Kirkland Preston. "To complete excavation, base preparation, installation, and backfill in just 48 hours required careful planning and a high level of teamwork among all partners. It was impressive to see so many individuals, companies, and agencies working together seamlessly."
The City of Springfield credits this achievement to the collaboration and expertise of project partners including Branco Enterprises Inc., Hartman & Company, and BNSF Railway. These partners played crucial roles in providing general contracting services, labor and equipment support, coordination, safety planning, and engineering oversight.
This operation marks an important advancement in phase I of the multi-year Renew Jordan Creek project. The project aims to reduce historic flooding in downtown Springfield while also supporting redevelopment opportunities and improving water quality in Jordan Creek. Construction for phase I began in late 2024 and is expected to last approximately two years, with completion anticipated in late 2026.
