Sterling Heights Concludes Successful 2025 Road Construction Season
TelAve News/10881719
~ Sterling Heights, MI - The City of Sterling Heights has successfully completed its sixth full construction season, thanks to the voter-renewed Safe Streets millage in 2019. This commitment to public safety and infrastructure excellence has allowed the city to make critical upgrades to streets, bridges, and neighborhood roadways.
Throughout the 2025 construction season, Sterling Heights completed seven major road projects and reconstructed or improved 4.6 miles of 30 local roads. These improvements were strategically planned and executed to enhance safety, mobility, and the overall driving experience for both residents and visitors.
With a total investment of $26 million in roadway improvements this year, Sterling Heights has demonstrated its proactive approach to maintaining modern, safe, and attractive streets. Mayor Michael Taylor expressed his gratitude towards the residents who supported the Safe Streets millage, stating that their investment has paved the way for a brighter future for the community.
Among the completed projects are asphalt resurfacing and curb repair on 17 Mile Road, a new bridge deck with pedestrian separated barrier on 18 Mile Road/Bridge, asphalt resurfacing and bridge rehabilitation on 14 Mile Road, a new bridge deck with pedestrian separated barrier on Hayes Road Bridge, asphalt resurfacing on Dobry Drive, three pedestrian bridges over West Schoenherr over the Plumbrook Drain, Nature Center bridge over the Clinton River and Lakeside Island bridge. Additionally, there have been traffic signal upgrades at 14 locations which are expected to be completed by winter/spring.

The city also prioritizes sidewalk replacement as part of its commitment to public safety. In 2025 alone, Sterling Heights replaced 315,300 square feet of deteriorated sidewalk - equivalent to 12,600 flags of sidewalk.
City Engineer Brent Bashaw emphasized that keeping the community safe is a top priority in Sterling Heights. He stated that it's not just about drivers but also about pedestrians, cyclists and anyone who uses the public sidewalk system. This is why the city has a robust sidewalk replacement program in place.
