TelAve News/10904108
~ During the Tacoma City Council's Study Session today, Police Chief Patti Jackson unveiled a new community programming effort aimed at strengthening relationships between the Tacoma Police Department and community members.

The Tacoma Public Safety Partnership (TPSP) is an 18-month pilot initiative that focuses on education, transparency, relationships, and meaningful dialogue. The program aims to bring together community members, police department leadership, and employee representatives to foster mutual understanding and promote transparency.

Chief Patti Jackson expressed her commitment to building better relationships between the police department and the community they serve. She stated that the TPSP provides an opportunity for community members from various groups such as nonprofits, faith communities, and youth organizations to get to know the Tacoma Police Department before needing their services in an emergency.

The mission of TPSP is to strengthen community relationships by increasing mutual understanding, promoting transparency, encouraging constructive dialogue, and supporting continuous improvement. Participants will attend monthly meetings where they will have the chance to meet with Tacoma Police leadership and subject matter experts. These meetings will include case study reviews, educational presentations, and open conversations between community participants and police leadership.

Deputy Mayor Joe Bushnell also expressed his support for the TPSP. He stated that it will provide valuable insight into how the Tacoma Police Department operates and handles cases. As someone who has worked closely with TPD leadership during his time on City Council, he believes that this partnership will allow for more transparency and clarity for members of the community.

Community members who are interested in serving on TPSP can apply online at tacoma.gov/TPDcommunity. Chief Patti Jackson is available for media questions and interviews regarding TPSP. For scheduling inquiries, please contact Public Information Officer Shelbie Boyd at 253-405-7134 or sboyd@tacoma.gov. This new initiative marks a significant step towards building stronger relationships between law enforcement and the community in Tacoma.
