The real Klaus entered Gunn's life in 2000 and became a beloved companion whose playful personality and devotion remained with her long after their years together. Gunn created the book as a way to keep his memory alive while introducing a new generation of children and Schnauzer lovers to the dog who inspired so many happy memories.

She remembers Klaus as a dog who loved chasing balls, playing in the park, and visiting Dog Beach, but says his most important role was much simpler: being the family's best friend.

That real-life affection finds its way into the closing pages, where the jokes and mischief give way to a tender reminder of the happiness that comes from simply spending time together.
