Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Over $1 Million In Grants To Boost Workforce Readiness
TelAve News/10882774
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that six independent school districts (ISDs) in Texas have been awarded over $1 million in dual credit grants. These grants, provided by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), aim to prepare students for high-demand and well-paying jobs after graduation.
According to Governor Abbott, investing in the state's young and growing workforce is crucial for its future success. He believes that these dual credit grants will give students the necessary tools to secure good-paying careers post-graduation. The governor expressed his gratitude towards TWC for their dedication to training the next generation of hardworking Texans.
TWC Chairman Joe Esparza also emphasized the importance of these grants, stating that they are vital investments in Texas' economic prosperity. He explained that students who gain hands-on work experience while earning a degree or certification have a significant advantage in the job market. This advantage can lead to higher salaries and faster career progression in high-demand occupations such as nursing, welding, and automotive technology.

The funding for these dual credit grants comes from TWC's Skills Development Fund, which aims to support, create, and expand dual credit and career and technical education (CTE) programs that address local demand for high-skill industries. These programs also allow high school students to earn college credit hours while pursuing their long-term career goals.
The six ISDs receiving these grants are Austwell-Tivoli ISD, Dimmit ISD, Hale Center ISD, La Villa ISD, Orange Grove ISD, and Woodson ISD. Each district will use the funds to purchase, repair or replace equipment for CTE programs such as phlebotomy, automotive technology, culinary arts, nursing, and welding.
Employers, schools, and students who are interested in learning more about training resources can visit TWC's Education Services page at twc.texas.gov/services/education. With these dual credit grants, Texas is taking a proactive approach to preparing its students for successful careers and contributing to the state's economic growth.
