Texas: Governor Abbott, HHSC Announce SNAP Replacement Benefits Extension For Bexar County Residents Affected By Storms
TelAve News/10905617
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to extend the time for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in Bexar County to apply for replacement benefits for food lost or destroyed by recent storms. This decision comes as families across Texas continue to recover from severe weather and flooding, with the governor emphasizing the importance of providing support to those in need.
According to Governor Abbott, SNAP replacement benefits will play a crucial role in helping families replace food that was lost or destroyed during the recent storms. The extended deadline for applying for these benefits is September 17, 2026, giving recipients in Bexar County more time to access this assistance. Once requested, funds should be added to Lone Star Cards within two business days.
The request for an extension was made by HHSC and approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Administration (USDA). This extension allows SNAP recipients in Bexar County an additional 10 days to report food loss, bringing the total reporting time from 10 days to 20 days.

HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth expressed gratitude towards federal partners for their collaboration in making these replacement benefits available. She acknowledged that recent storms and power outages have made it difficult for many families in Bexar County to access healthy food, making these benefits even more crucial.
SNAP recipients can request a benefit replacement by calling 2-1-1 and selecting option 7 after choosing a language. They can also visit a local HHSC office or find one through YourTexasBenefits.com by clicking on "Find an Office" at the bottom of the page.
In addition, clients of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) can also request replacement benefits if they have lost food purchased with September WIC benefits due to power outages or storm damage. These clients are advised to contact their WIC office before September 30, 2026, and can find a local office at TexasWIC.org.
For Texans impacted by any disaster, the HHSC Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage provides more information on available resources. Those in need of local resources such as food or shelter can dial 2-1-1 and select option 1 for assistance.
As the state continues to recover from recent severe weather and flooding, Governor Abbott's announcement of extended SNAP replacement benefits serves as a reminder that support is available for those in need.
