~ Governor Greg Abbott of Texas activated the state's emergency response resources today in preparation for a potential tropical storm in the northern Gulf of America. He held a severe weather briefing and press conference at the Texas State Emergency Operations Center (SOC) to provide updates on the state's preparedness and potential impacts along the Upper Texas Coast and Southeast Texas.

During the press conference, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of prioritizing personal safety and following guidance from local officials. He urged individuals to gather necessary supplies such as food, water, and gas, as this is the first tropical storm Texas has faced this year.

The National Hurricane Center is closely monitoring an area of low pressure in the northern Gulf that is expected to bring moisture to Texas communities starting today through midweek. The primary threats include heavy rain, flooding, and rip currents. In addition, excessive heat and humidity are contributing factors that could intensify storm impacts.

Texans along the Upper Texas Coast and in Southeast Texas are advised to remain weather aware and have an emergency plan ready. Possible tropical-storm-force wind gusts along the coast could cause isolated power outages. The state is working closely with electric power providers, the Public Utility Commission of Texas, and ERCOT to monitor grid conditions and respond quickly to any storm-related outages.

Governor Abbott was joined by various officials including Public Utility Commission Chairman Thomas Gleeson, ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas, and representatives from agencies such as TDEM, DPS, Parks and Wildlife, and Transportation.

At Governor Abbott's direction, TDEM requested that member agencies of the Texas Emergency Management Council report to SOC for 24-hour operations and ensure their resources are ready for deployment if necessary. These agencies include departments such as Transportation, Health Services Commission, Agriculture Department, National Guard, Cyber Command, Red Cross, Salvation Army among others.

In addition to preparing for potential tropical storms, these agencies are also actively engaged in responding to ongoing wildfires across the state.

As hurricane season reaches its peak, Texans are reminded to follow flood preparedness and safety tips. This includes knowing the types of flood risks in their area, signing up for community warning systems, building an emergency supply kit, protecting important documents, and being cautious when encountering water on roads or in other areas.
