Texas: Governor Abbott Hosts Canadian Opposition Leader Poilievre In Austin

~ In a meeting at the Governor's Mansion, Governor Greg Abbott and Leader of the Official Opposition of Canada, Pierre Poilievre, discussed ways to strengthen energy, trade relations, and commercial ties between Texas and Canada.

This was Mr. Poilievre's first visit to Texas in over 30 years and he commended the state for its successful economic model of free enterprise. Both leaders emphasized the importance of operating at the speed of business and agreed that a stable regulatory climate is crucial for a thriving economy. Mr. Poilievre also advocated for increased trade between Texas and Canada, highlighting the potential benefits for both countries.

During their discussion, Governor Abbott highlighted Texas' rapid economic growth in various industries such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production, cattle, cotton, semiconductors, and aerospace. He attributed this success to factors such as tax incentives, a strong workforce pipeline, a friendly regulatory environment, and a robust education system that fosters innovation.

Mr. Poilievre reiterated his belief that it is in the best interest of both Canada and Texas to continue building a strong partnership between their energy industries. The leaders also emphasized the need for a strong defense partnership to protect their citizens from foreign threats.

According to recent data, Canada is the third-largest source country for foreign direct investment projects in Texas. Over the past decade alone, Canadian companies have invested over $11.5 billion in more than 150 economic development projects in Texas, creating over 15,500 jobs. In 2025 alone, Canada was Texas' second-largest export destination with over $34.5 billion in exports and $69 billion in total trade between the two economies.
