~ As severe storms threaten the state of Texas this week, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure the safety of its residents. Today, he directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to increase the readiness level of the Texas State Emergency Operations Center (SOC) to Level III in preparation for potential disasters.

In a statement, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of being prepared for these storms. "In preparation for forecasted severe storms, I directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management to increase the readiness level of the State Operations Center," he said. "Texas stands ready to respond and swiftly deploy all necessary resources to support local officials with response operations and ensure the safety of Texans."

According to the National Weather Service, a storm system is expected to bring heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding across large areas of Texas, including West, North, Central, Southwest, and East Texas. These storms may also bring hazards such as damaging winds, large hail, and possible tornadoes. Additional storms are forecasted for early next week.

To prepare for these potential disasters, TDEM has requested that representatives from various member agencies report to the SOC and begin 24-hour operations. These agencies include the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas A&M Forest Service, Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force), Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Texas National Guard.

Governor Abbott has also directed TDEM to activate additional state emergency response resources ahead of an increasing flood risk. These resources include Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads from the Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1), high profile vehicles and Blackhawk helicopters with hoist capability from the Texas National Guard, and The State of Texas Incident Management Team from TDEM.

Other resources available at Governor Abbott's direction include Strike Teams from the Texas A&M Forest Service (Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System), Severe Weather Support Packages from the Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force), Game Wardens, rescue boat teams, and helicopters with hoist capability from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, helicopters with hoist capability, Texas Highway Patrol Troopers, and the Tactical Marine Unit from the Texas Department of Public Safety, personnel monitoring road conditions from the Texas Department of Transportation, Disaster Assessment and Recovery Agents from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, power outage monitoring and coordination with utility providers from the Public Utility Commission of Texas, monitoring of the state's natural gas supply and communication with the oil and gas industry from the Railroad Commission of Texas, and air/water/wastewater monitoring from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

This is not the first time Governor Abbott has taken action in anticipation of severe storm impacts. Yesterday, he directed TDEM to activate state emergency response resources.

As these storms approach, Texans are urged to take necessary precautions. This includes creating an emergency plan, assembling a disaster supply kit, and heeding warnings from local emergency officials.
