Texas: Governor Abbott Joins Secretary Burgum At Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge Renaming Ceremony In Anahuac
TelAve News/10861014
~ Governor Greg Abbott and U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum came together today for a special ceremony at the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. The purpose of the event was to rename the refuge to the Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge, in honor of a young girl who tragically lost her life.
Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order to rename the refuge as a tribute to Jocelyn and her love for wildlife and nature. Governor Abbott expressed his gratitude for this decision, stating that it was an honor to be present at the renaming ceremony.
During his speech, Governor Abbott spoke about Jocelyn's passion for animals and how this refuge will serve as a safe haven for them. He also emphasized the importance of preserving natural habitats where these animals can thrive undisturbed.

The Governor also took the opportunity to thank President Trump and Secretary Burgum for their efforts in honoring Jocelyn with this sanctuary. He hoped that her family would find solace in knowing that she will forever be remembered through this refuge.
The renaming ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Acting Director Paul Souza, former Complex Manager of the Texas Chenier Plain Refuge Tim Cooper, Anahauc National Wildlife Refuge Manager Kristin Fritiz, and Alexis Nungaray, Jocelyn's mother.
In his 2025 State of the State Address, Governor Abbott had called for legislation that would impose the death penalty on anyone convicted of murdering a child. This demand was made in response to Jocelyn's tragic death at the hands of illegal immigrants.
The renaming of Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge to Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge serves as a lasting tribute to a beautiful young soul who was taken from this world too soon. May her memory live on through this sanctuary and may it bring peace to her family during this difficult time.
