Texas: Governor Abbott Swears-In DPS Director Martin In Austin

~ Austin, Texas - Governor Greg Abbott administered the oath of office for the 14th Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Freeman F. Martin at DPS Headquarters in Austin today. Director Martin brings a wealth of experience to his new position, having worked his way up from a trooper to becoming a Texas Ranger and eventually serving as Senior Deputy Director of DPS.

In his speech, Governor Abbott praised Director Martin's extensive knowledge and experience at every level and subject matter within the department. He also highlighted the importance of having a leader with true dedication to the rule of law, which he believes Director Martin possesses. The Governor expressed confidence that under Director Martin's leadership, Texas will remain a law-and-order state and the safety of its citizens will be safeguarded.

Director Martin also spoke at the ceremony, acknowledging the significant public safety and homeland security threats currently facing Texas. He thanked Governor Abbott and the Public Safety Commission for trusting him with this important role and expressed his commitment to making Texas safer and improving the department.

Prior to his appointment as Director, Freeman F. Martin served as Senior Deputy Director for DPS where he played a crucial role in overseeing various activities and operations within the department. He began his career with DPS in 1990 as a Texas Highway Patrol (THP) trooper in Winnie. Over the next three decades, he held various positions within DPS including THP Corporal in Lubbock, Narcotics Service Sergeant in Houston, Texas Ranger Sergeant in Houston, Texas Ranger Lieutenant in Austin, and Texas Ranger Captain and Major in Houston. In 2014, he was named Regional Commander for the Central Texas Region before being appointed Deputy Director of Homeland Security Operations by the Public Safety Commission in 2018.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by Public Safety Commission Chairman Steven Mach, former DPS Director Steve McCraw, and other law enforcement and DPS leaders who showed their support for Director Martin's new role.

As Director Martin takes on the responsibility of leading the premier state agency responsible for protecting Texas, it is clear that he has the experience, dedication, and support necessary to tackle the challenges ahead. With his leadership and the talent within DPS at every level, Texas can look forward to a safer and stronger future.
