~ In a move to prioritize educational opportunities for students in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) have announced the implementation of Free College Application Week. This initiative, which will take place from October 13-19, 2025, aims to make the college application process more accessible and affordable for Texas residents.

According to Governor Abbott, this initiative is part of the state's efforts to ensure that students have access to the best education possible in order to succeed in high-demand and well-paying jobs after graduation. "By supporting our students today, we are investing in a stronger Texas tomorrow," he stated.

Free College Application Week was created through Senate Bill 2231 during the 89th Texas Legislative Session. Under this bill, all public colleges and universities in Texas are required to waive admission application fees for Texas residents who apply through ApplyTexas to undergraduate programs.

This initiative is just one of several tools available to help students streamline their college search and make achieving their higher education goals more affordable. Alongside My Texas Future, ApplyTexas, and the Direct Admissions program, Free College Application Week provides an additional resource for students.

THECB Commissioner Wynn Rosser emphasized the importance of removing barriers for students when it comes to pursuing higher education. "In addition to the cost savings, combined with other tools available to Texans for planning and achieving educational and career goals, free application week removes a barrier so more students can take their first step toward higher education," he said.

Starting from its first year in 2025, Free College Application Week will be held annually during the second full week of October (Monday-Sunday). All Texas residents applying for undergraduate admission at public institutions through ApplyTexas are eligible to participate. This includes both first-time college students and transfer students. For details on residency status, applicants can refer to the Texas Residency Guidelines.

My Texas Future is a digital tool that connects Texans with resources and information about postsecondary opportunities. It offers personalized interactive features to help prospective students identify their interests and skills, explore careers and programs, plan for school, and navigate financial aid. Users can create accounts, save preferences, and even request to speak to an advisor through this platform.

One of the key features of My Texas Future is a career quiz that helps users explore their professional interests. With information about various jobs in Texas based on their interests, users can compare different careers by local demand, pay, required education, and related skills. They can also compare credential programs by average tuition, location, and potential salary after graduation.

In addition to My Texas Future, the Direct Admissions program is another valuable resource for students. Through this program, students can receive a list of participating Texas institutions where they may qualify for acceptance before even beginning the college application process. By sharing their academic information through their My Texas Future profile – including class rank, grade point average, and SAT/ACT scores – students can receive this list as early as the end of their junior year.

With the implementation of Free College Application Week and other resources like My Texas Future and Direct Admissions, the state of Texas is taking significant steps towards making higher education more accessible and affordable for its residents. This initiative not only removes financial barriers but also provides valuable tools for students to plan and achieve their educational goals.
