"The Original Jolene" Shares Her Story Behind One of Music's Most Iconic Names
TelAve News/10891559
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - TelAve -- A name recognized around the world, immortalized in the legendary song "Jolene" by Dolly Parton, belongs to a real woman stepping forward to tell her story.
Jolene Reeves, author of The Original Jolene: Life Behind the Lyrics, is sharing the true story behind her life as the girl many believe inspired one of the most famous songs in country music history.
According to Reeves, her connection to Parton began in a moment that would shape her identity forever. As a young child attending a concert in Michigan, she was spotted near the stage. An upset, red-haired girl catching the attention of Parton during a meet-and-greet following the performance. In a spontaneous act of kindness, Parton brought her on stage, comforting her and asking her name. That moment introduced the world, at least in spirit, to "the original Jolene."
Parton has long spoken about how she drew inspiration for Jolene from real-life encounters, including a young fan with striking red hair and a name she found unforgettable, as well as a bank teller who showed particular interest in her husband. The song, recorded in 1973 and known for its haunting melody and emotional storytelling, became one of Parton's signature works and a global cultural touchstone.

Reeves emphasizes that her name itself was not created by the song but given to her at birth by her parents; however, growing up with such a distinctive name, one tied so closely to a character portrayed as a "temptress" in a famous song, presented unique challenges.
"When people ask 'why now?'" Reeves explains, "Because I've lived with the name my entire life. I've reached a point where I accept it proudly, and I'd love the opportunity to reunite with Dolly Parton again."
Now residing in a small town just outside of Atlanta, Reeves reflects on a lifetime of questions, assumptions, and personal growth tied to her name.
Her book, The Original Jolene: Life Behind the Lyrics, offers a deeply personal account of what it was like growing up as what she describes as "the only Jolene in the world"—a name instantly recognized, yet often misunderstood. Through her story, Reeves reclaims the narrative, presenting a perspective that contrasts sharply with the fictionalized figure in Parton's song.
