Total Hip Replacement Enables Dog to Keep on Running

TelAve News/10584150
WHIPPANY, N.J. - TelAve -- In 1995, a six-week-old retriever-mix was adopted by an avid runner in Texas.  The owner hoped his new pup, whom he named Amber Hoff, would share his passion for keeping fit.  By the time she was six years old, the two of them had logged over 7,000 miles together.  Unfortunately, around that time Amber became lame due to chronic hip pain. Diagnosis revealed degenerative osteoarthritis, which was resolved with a BioMedtrix Total Hip Replacement by William Liska, DVM, DACVS in Houston, Texas.  After a brief recovery from surgery, Amber went on to run another 8,000 on her new hip. Following her death in 2011, Amber's owners offered to have a histology report of the THR implants.  Results revealed a "metal-on-plastic THR implant provided a robust, long-term solution, even in the face of sustained, high level activity for 9 years."
