JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - TelAve -- Author Lane Keller connects the University of Michigan's new first-semester grading policy to a larger crisis involving academic burnout, student anxiety, identity, artificial intelligence, and an increasingly uncertain path into adulthood.

The University of Michigan has decided that beginning with students entering its College of Literature, Science, and the Arts in fall 2027, first-semester letter grades will not appear on external transcripts or count toward GPA. Students will still receive their actual grades and professor feedback, while external transcripts will record Pass or No Credit. The university has identified the mental health crisis among college-age students as one reason for the experiment.

At first glance, the decision invites an obvious question: Have American universities reached the point where college students need to be protected from their own grades?

That concern deserves to be taken seriously. Academic standards matter, failure is part of adulthood, and universities do young people no favors if protecting them from discomfort leaves them less capable of handling the world beyond campus.

A second question is considerably harder to dismiss: Why are so many intelligent young people anxious, exhausted, and burned out before their adult lives have really begun?

Gen Z Has Grown Up Being Measured

Today's college students have spent much of their lives inside systems that measure and compare them. Grades, standardized tests, college admissions, extracurricular activities, and class rankings establish academic measurements, while social media adds followers, likes, views, matches, and other public measurements of popularity, appearance, and social acceptance.

College intensifies the process through GPAs, internships, networking, résumés, and the competition for employment. Achievement can gradually move from something a young person pursues to something required to establish personal worth.

This is when a bad grade becomes more than a bad academic performance. Rejection from a college or employer can feel like a verdict on identity, while falling behind peers can feel like evidence of personal failure.

Reducing that pressure by covering grades may address one symptom. It does not address the system of relentless measurement underneath it.
