U.S. Behavioral Case Study Challenges Scientific Basis of XL Bully Ban in UK and Ireland
TelAve News/10893659
ORLANDO, Fla. - TelAve -- A newly released behavioral study conducted by the Florida Pit Crew Foundation is challenging the scientific foundation of breed-specific legislation (BSL), including the XL American Bully bans enacted in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Led by canine behaviorist Christa Cole, the study has documented a controlled, high-density multi-dog household consisting of 10 bully-type dogs, including multiple intact XL American Bullies, safely cohabiting within a residential home alongside young children under the age of nine.
Key Findings from the Study
A High-Risk Environment That Remained Stable
This case study is particularly significant because it represents a convergence of high-risk variables, including:

A structured behavioral matrix evaluating each dog across stability, arousal, trainability, and human safety revealed:
"If these dogs were inherently dangerous, this setup would fail very fast.
What people are seeing here is not an exception. It's what happens when dogs are properly managed."

The XL Bully bans introduced in the UK and Ireland were implemented following rising dog attack reports. However, this study highlights a critical issue:
The findings support a growing body of evidence that dog aggression is more accurately linked to:
This study presents a direct contradiction to the premise underlying breed-specific legislation:

Key Findings from the Study
- Zero Level 4 (severe) incidents requiring medical or legal intervention
- Zero recorded human-directed aggression across all dogs
- Successful management of multiple intact males and females
- Stable integration within a household containing young children
- Behavioral outcomes determined by structure and management—not breed
A High-Risk Environment That Remained Stable
This case study is particularly significant because it represents a convergence of high-risk variables, including:
- Multiple intact, working-line dogs
- High-drive temperaments
- Close-quarters residential living
- Daily interaction within a family environment

A structured behavioral matrix evaluating each dog across stability, arousal, trainability, and human safety revealed:
- 100% of dogs scored maximum in human safety (5/5)
- Variations in arousal and dog-to-dog interaction were successfully managed through environmental control
- No correlation was found between breed type and human-directed risk
