VISION 2050 Award for Historic Tideflats Subarea Plan Presented by Puget Sound Regional Council at Tacoma City Council Meeting
TelAve News/10903830
~ During a recent Tacoma City Council meeting, the Puget Sound Regional Council recognized the Tideflats Subarea Plan with a prestigious VISION 2050 award. This plan, which was developed over seven years of collaboration between the City of Tacoma, the Port of Tacoma, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, the City of Fife, and Pierce County, aims to balance economic vitality, environmental restoration, and community well-being in one of Washington's most critical industrial areas.
The approval of this plan by the Tacoma City Council last December was a significant milestone in advancing a shared vision for the Tideflats area. The decision was unanimously supported by a multigovernmental Tideflats Steering Committee and marked an important step towards achieving a sustainable future for the region.
Tacoma Mayor Anders Ibsen expressed his gratitude towards all those involved in making this award possible. He specifically thanked the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, the City of Fife, Pierce County, the Port of Tacoma, and his predecessor former Mayor Victoria Woodards. He also acknowledged the hard work and dedication of City planning staff and Council Member Kristina Walker. Mayor Ibsen emphasized that this award is a testament to what can be achieved when governments work together towards a common goal.

The VISION 2050 award was presented by Puget Sound Regional Council Executive Director Josh Brown. In his remarks, Brown highlighted how the Tideflats Subarea Plan successfully addresses competing viewpoints while prioritizing integrated land use, environmental stewardship, and economic development. He also commended its focus on developing a multimodal transportation system that supports freight movement and promotes new clean energy markets.
Brown acknowledged that this project was not an easy feat and did not happen overnight. However, he congratulated the City of Tacoma and all partners involved for their collaborative efforts in finding solutions for complex issues.
The recognition from Puget Sound Regional Council serves as validation for the hard work and dedication put into the Tideflats Subarea Plan. Moving forward, the City of Tacoma and its partner agencies are committed to continuing this work to bring economic prosperity to the South Sound region.
