Zola on Trial: The Definitive Life of France's Most Fearless Writer Returns

Vita releases Alan Strauss-Schom's revised biography of the novelist whose "J'accuse" challenged the French Republic, arriving September 29, 2026—the 124th anniversary of Emile Zola's death.
NEW YORK - TelAve -- Before the word "intellectual" became a public role, Emile Zola made it one. In "J'accuse," his 1898 open letter defending the wrongfully convicted Alfred Dreyfus, Zola confronted the French military establishment and helped place the Republic itself on trial.
On September 29, 2026—the 124th anniversary of Zola's death—Vita, Casa Carlini's biography and memoir imprint, will release the print edition of Alan Strauss-Schom's Émile Zola: A Biography. First published in 1987, this acclaimed account remains a vital portrait of the novelist, naturalist, and public citizen who made literature a force for truth and justice. The ebook edition is available now through Amazon and other major retailers.
Strauss-Schom traces Zola's rise from difficult beginnings to his position as France's leading late-nineteenth-century novelist and author of the monumental Les Rougon-Macquart cycle. The biography also captures the personal stakes of Zola's intervention in the Dreyfus Affair. "J'accuse" cost him a libel conviction, a prison sentence, a fine, and exile—proof that he was willing to risk reputation, freedom, and safety for truth.

The biography was widely praised on its first publication. Auberon Waugh of The Independent wrote, "Dr. Schom can claim to have written a definitive biography." Martin Seymour-Smith called it "an essential book" and "a joy to read," while Julian Symons praised its "efficient, thorough... illuminating" approach. Anita Brookner called it "a good, sane introduction," and Peter Quennell described it as "a solid, yet well-constructed book."
The new revised edition features a cover by Jenny Lim, a recent graduate of California State University, East Bay. Lim combines a black-and-white photograph of Zola by Cautin & Berger, the renowned Paris photography studio, with a reproduction of Zola's signature in warm gold—an arresting design that reflects the writer's intellect, humanity, and resolve.
"Zola understood that a writer's words can have consequences beyond the literary world," said Charles Carlini, founder of Casa Carlini. "He was willing to risk his reputation, freedom, and safety in the name of truth. That combination of artistic achievement and civic courage makes his life more urgent than ever."
