AKCP Monitors HVAC Systems for Merlin Entertainments Group Facilities
TelAve News/10677965
AKCP, the world's oldest and largest supplier of networked wired and wireless sensor solutions, in cooperation with the University of Technology Sydney, installs a monitoring system for Merlin Entertainments Group Attractions at Darling Harbour, Sydney.
SYDNEY - TelAve -- Merlin Entertainments Group (MEG), a global leader in location-based family entertainment operates facilities in several countries. AKCP partnered with the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) to provide sensors as part of a study on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its use for predictive maintenance of the HVAC system. The data would help MEG transition from periodic preventative maintenance to a smart preventative maintenance strategy for their HVAC system.
For the AI to accurately predict the need for HVAC maintenance, such as filter changes, the machine requires data input. The data, in this case, was provided by AKCP Wireless Tunnel™ sensors. UTS deployed AKCP differential air pressure sensors, temperature and humidity sensors in the ductwork at several MEG facilities in the Sydney area. The system is able to detect, and predict dirty air filters and send alerts to the maintenance management staff when air filter changes are required. So rather than arbitrary filter changes at specific intervals, the changes can be based on real-world data. This allows MEG to maintain facilities that are comfortable for their guests, minimize downtime and maintenance, and save costs with filter changes only when needed.

Over time as the filter performs its job of stopping particles entry, improving the indoor air quality of the facilities, it also becomes dirty. These particles, trapped in the filter over time degrade the filter performance, making it more difficult for air to pass through. This results in a build-up of pressure on the intake side of the filter. The use of the AKCP differential air pressure sensor allows for monitoring of the pressure differential on either side of the filter. As the pressure differential increases, it is a sign of a clogged filter. At this point, alerts can be sent that it's time to change the filter.
This is just one aspect of the HVAC system that can be monitored. The MEG HVAC is a complex chilled water system that brings in seawater that is pumped through filters and around the building. Future phases of the study would employ further AKCP sensors to monitor differential water pressure on filters, power consumption, and water pressures, as well as experimental development of sensors that can detect cavitation of impeller pumps and water hammer. With these additional sensors as an input to the AI, further cost savings through smart preventative maintenance can be realized.
