Bloomington: City Advises Drivers of August Road Closures Amid Back-to-School Traffic

~ Bloomington, IN - As the second half of August approaches, travelers in Bloomington should be prepared for several full road closures. These closures will affect Second and Rogers streets, South Rogers Street between Dodds and First streets, and Third Street between College Avenue and Walnut Street.

The City of Bloomington is working closely with contractors to reduce the duration of these closures and minimize overlap where possible. However, construction schedules are subject to change due to weather conditions, scheduling needs, or other unforeseen circumstances.

To stay updated on road, sidewalk, and parking restrictions, residents are encouraged to visit bloomington.in.gov/inroads for the latest information.

The anticipated traffic impacts for each closure are as follows:

Second and Rogers Intersection:

- A full intersection closure is expected to begin on Monday, August 17 for a duration of seven days.

- This closure is necessary for the safe installation of new storm sewer infrastructure in the intersection.

- Through traffic will be directed to follow posted detours.

- Rogers Street traffic will be detoured to Walnut/College via 1st and 3rd Streets.

- 2nd Street traffic will be detoured to 1st Street via Walker and Walnut/College.

- Local access will still be maintained for adjacent properties and businesses.

- This work is part of the West Second Street Modernization and Safety Improvements project.

South Rogers Street - Dodds Street to First Street:

- A full closure is expected to begin on Tuesday, August 18 for a duration of three days.

- This closure is necessary for the installation of new storm sewer infrastructure on Rogers Street just north of Dodds Street. Additionally, a full-depth pavement replacement will take place in this area.

- Through traffic will be directed to follow posted detours:

- Truck Route and through traffic will be detoured to Walnut/College via Patterson/Grimes and 3rd Street.

- A local traffic detour route will utilize 1st Street, Wylie, Fairview, and Dodds.

- Local access will still be maintained for adjacent properties and businesses.

- This work is part of the Patterson/Grimes/Rogers Resurfacing project.

Third Street - College Avenue to Walnut Street:

- A full closure is expected to begin on Tuesday, August 25. The City is working with the contractor to limit the closure to approximately two weeks.

- This closure is necessary for various construction activities including removing existing pavement and concrete, replacing sewer structures, installing new curbs and medians, completing electrical work, and installing new light poles and traffic-signal detection loops.

- Through traffic will be directed to follow posted detours:

- Eastbound traffic on Third Street will be detoured to Second Street via College Avenue and Walnut Street.

- Westbound traffic on Third Street will be detoured to Fourth Street via Walnut Street and College Avenue.

- Local access will still be maintained for adjacent properties and businesses.

- This work is part of the Convention Center expansion project and also includes previously planned pavement milling and resurfacing by the City of Bloomington Public Works Department.

The City acknowledges that these closures may cause inconvenience for residents, students, families, and visitors. However, they are necessary investments in safer streets, updated utilities, and more reliable public infrastructure. The City is working closely with contractors to complete the work as efficiently as possible and minimize overlapping impacts.
