Bloomington: University Elementary First in New Annual Safe Routes to School Planning Effort

TelAve News/10905898
~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington has joined forces with University Elementary School to launch the Safe Routes to School planning process. This initiative aims to improve the safety, accessibility, and ease of travel for students who walk, bike, ride the bus, or use other mobility devices to get to and from school. It will also mark the first school-specific Safe Routes to School plan developed by the City in over a decade and kick off an annual planning cycle with Bloomington schools.

The planning process will involve surveys, activities, and public meetings that will bring together students, families, school staff, and community members. The goal is to identify transportation challenges specific to University Elementary and develop a final Safe Routes to School plan that addresses both short-term improvements and long-term infrastructure needs. This plan will cater to every student's needs, whether they travel independently or with a trusted adult.

The plan will focus on implementing changes that can make school trips safer, such as improving sidewalks, crossings, bike connections, and other street improvements. It will also include traffic-safety education for students and families, programs that promote walking and biking, strategies to address unsafe driving near the school, and ways to measure the effectiveness of these changes.

It has been eight years since the City last completed Safe Routes to School plans in 2013. As part of this planning year for University Elementary, they will receive additional support from City staff and resources to develop, implement, and sustain their Safe Routes to School program. Other Bloomington schools can also participate as partner schools and gain access to Safe Routes curriculum materials for events and other forms of assistance.

Families of University Elementary students will have multiple opportunities over the next few months to provide their input on this project. The first step is a survey that aims to gather feedback on existing barriers, areas of concern, and potential improvements for routes used by students and families.
