TelAve News/10908610
~ The Monument Square Landmark District Study Committee and Boston Landmarks Commission staff have released a preliminary working draft of a study report on a proposed landmark district and protection area in Charlestown.
The draft is the first of three versions planned for public comment, according to the announcement. It is available with a feedback form at boston.gov/monumentsquare. Two printed copies are available at the Charlestown branch of the Boston Public Library. The committee said the draft is for information and public review and is not to be used for regulation.
Comments on the current draft may be submitted through the website's feedback form or by email to BLC@boston.gov until Nov. 4, 2026. After a revised draft is posted in November, comments may be submitted until Jan. 12, 2027.

A community meeting about the proposal is scheduled for Oct. 21, 2026, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 545 Medford St. in Charlestown. The committee said the meeting will cover what a landmark district and protection area are, proposed boundaries and potential effects on property owners within the proposed area.
The Boston Landmarks Commission accepted a petition from registered voters for further study on July 26, 2022. The study committee is examining the neighborhood's historic, architectural and archaeological significance, assessing whether it meets state designation criteria, proposing boundaries and developing recommendations for long-term management, according to the announcement.
The committee said public participation is important to its work. Meeting materials, agendas, approved minutes, presentations and recordings, as well as a newsletter sign-up form, are available on the project website. Physical copies of documents can also be reviewed at the Charlestown library branch.
