Boston: The New England Conservatory is a Landmark!
TelAve News/10905464
~ The New England Conservatory of Music, located at 290 Huntington Avenue, has a rich history that goes beyond its renowned music education. Founded in 1867 by Eben Tourjée, the NEC has made a significant impact in the field of music education and is the oldest independent school of music in the United States.
Over the years, NEC has produced numerous influential figures in the world of music, including educators, managers, conductors, solo artists, orchestral players, and choral singers. Its contributions to the formation of music programs across the nation and around the world have solidified its reputation as a leading institution in music education.
One lesser-known fact about NEC is its connection to some prominent historical figures. For instance, Coretta Scott King, an activist and leader of the American civil rights movement and wife of Martin Luther King Jr., met her future husband on the steps of this very building while she was a student at NEC. This historic landmark has also seen other notable graduates such as Florence Price, the first African American woman recognized as a symphonic composer; Cecil Taylor, a groundbreaking pianist and composer known for his contributions to free jazz; and Coretta Scott King herself.

NEC's building on Huntington Avenue is individually listed in both State and National Registers of Historic Places and holds an individual National Historic Landmark designation. Designed by renowned architecture firm Wheelwright & Haven in 1902, it stands as one of Boston's best examples of Renaissance Revival architecture. The building's primary facades showcase balanced and symmetrical fenestration with classical composition and materials that exude permanence.
In 1928, an addition known as Brown Hall was seamlessly integrated into the original building's appearance and character. This addition is currently the only exterior alteration to NEC's structure.
On July 14th, 2026, at a public hearing held by the Boston Landmarks Commission (BLC), the staff recommended designating the New England Conservatory as a Landmark under Chapter 772. This recommendation was subsequently approved by the Mayor on July 29th, 2026, and the City Council on August 5th, 2026. As a result of this designation, any exterior work done on the property will require prior review and approval from the BLC.
