Memorial to the poet Lord Byron to begin relocation journey to its new home in London's Hyde Park

WESTMINSTER, U.K. - TelAve -- Work is due to start tomorrow moving one of London's neglected and forgotten gems, the national Byron Memorial Statue, from its forlorn position on a traffic island on London's Park Lane to a publicly accessible, high profile location near Hyde Park's Victoria Gate.

The appointed contractor, PAYE Stonework and Restoration Ltd., will remove the statue and dismantle the plinth before taking both to an offsite location for restoration and conservation. Works at the new site will start on 13th April with the construction of new foundations before the memorial is reassembled. The works are due to be completed at the end of June, with the planting of a new landscape scheme scheduled to follow at the start of the next planting season.

Previously, Byron enthusiasts all over the world and local community organisations generously donated to a public fundraising campaign supported by the Heritage of London Trust and the Murray Family. This quickly raised the estimated £380,000 necessary, including a generous £230,000 grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Stuart McLeod, Director of England - London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: "We're proud to support the restoration and relocation of the Byron Memorial Statue, ensuring that this important piece of our cultural and literary heritage can be enjoyed for generations to come.
