California: Governor Newsom announces $20 million in grant funding matched by Google to support local journalism across the state
TelAve News/10901224
~ In a move to support and strengthen local journalism, Governor Gavin Newsom announced today that $20 million in grant funding will be allocated for two additional years, matched by Google. This initiative, known as the California Civic Media Program, aims to provide financial support to eligible state and local news organizations.
The program is designed to prioritize local and community news outlets, particularly those in underserved communities. Eligible newsrooms can now apply for up to $250,000 in one-time funding to support original reporting, sustain California's press corps, and promote civic engagement.
This announcement comes after the Governor and Legislature recently allocated $20 million for the program's extension. The additional funding from Google will further bolster the efforts of the California Civic Media Program, which also includes the California Local News Fellowship.
