California: Governor Newsom signs executive order to help Los Angeles rebuild faster and stronger
TelAve News/10851078
~ Governor Gavin Newsom has taken action to help the city of Los Angeles rebuild after the recent Southern California firestorms. On January 12, 2025, he signed an executive order that will waive certain requirements and extend protections against price gouging.
The executive order suspends permitting and review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act. This will allow victims of the fires to restore their homes and businesses at a faster pace without facing any roadblocks.
In a statement, Governor Newsom emphasized the importance of streamlining the rebuilding process for those who have lost their homes and businesses. He also directed state agencies to identify other ways to make the rebuilding process more efficient and affordable.
The executive order also extends protections against price gouging on building materials, storage services, construction, and other essential goods and services until January 7, 2026 in Los Angeles County. This will help ensure that those affected by the fires are not taken advantage of during this difficult time.
Governor Newsom has also committed to working with the Legislature to identify any necessary statutory changes that can help expedite rebuilding while also enhancing wildfire resilience and safety.

The Governor has made it clear that he will continue to work with both state agencies and the Legislature to assist those affected by the fires in rebuilding what they have lost. A copy of the executive order can be found on his website.
In addition to signing this executive order, Governor Newsom spent time on January 11, 2025 visiting with first responders who are on the front lines of fighting these devastating fires. He also toured areas that have been destroyed by what he described as "hurricane-force firestorms."
As another round of severe fire weather is expected in California starting on Monday, Governor Newsom announced that new resources are being added to assist in fighting these fires. This includes a historic deployment of firefighters from Mexico who arrived on Saturday.
The Governor met with 72 firefighters and emergency personnel from Mexico, further increasing the comprehensive response effort to combat the fires in Los Angeles. This collaboration between California and Mexico highlights the importance of working together to address these natural disasters.
Overall, Governor Newsom's actions demonstrate his commitment to helping those affected by the fires in Los Angeles rebuild as quickly and efficiently as possible. He will continue to work towards finding solutions that not only expedite the rebuilding process but also prioritize safety and resilience against future wildfires.
